Chapter Three

Chapter Three

“Can I play now?” Toby’s whiny voice echoed through the almost empty house, “Please! You and Jamie have been playing all day!”
“Stop exaggerating, Tobes. We’ve only been home for 45 minutes, you dodo.”
“Don’t call me that.” He gave Jamie his puppy dog look, the one where his lower lip covered the top one and his big green eyes looked about ten times bigger than they usually did, like the hamster in Bedtime Stories, and then tilted his head slightly down and looked directly into Jamie’s eyes and tried to look like he was about to cry. It was a very good try, and it was certainly a lot better than it’s ever been. Eilean almost fell for it herself, but then Jamie said something and she came back to my senses. “Well, we could him have just the smallest of goes...” He turned to her as he was saying this. She knew what he meant; she was to play along with it. It would be unfair on Toby to leave him out of something. They would come back to the computer after he’d gone to do his homework, even though he only got a very small amount, it would give them enough time to do something.

“No! My best friend has been turned against me! By my own brother! He’s been zombified! Okay, okay. You take control! Play the game..... But don’t blame me if the tickle monster comes out of the computer and eats you all up! Mwahaha! That was the good thing about Eilean; she knew how to turn absolutely anything into a joke.

After explaining to Toby how to use the controls, Jamie and Eilean made their way into the garden. They sat on the grass for a bit, just looking up at the clouds. It was a damp day and the dewdrops from the morning before were still lingering between the blades of tall, green, thick grass. “That one looks like a syringe,” said Jamie, “You know, one of those things the doctor injects you with.”
“Oh, Jamie, please don’t remind me about syringes... We had the ‘anti-breast cancer’ jabs at school last week, and they hurt like hell.” They looked up at the bright blue sky again. Strangely, there were no clouds at all. What on earth was going on?
Eilean looked at Jamie, lying on the grass. I cannot believe it... The only boy I can talk to without getting mocked, and it has to be HIM....Of all the people it could’ve been.... It had to be him....she tried to conceal her feelings, but her eyes were starting to glisten. She’d never tell him anything to his face, though. They’d been friends for years, since they were three in fact, and it had only been last week when she started to think of him as more than a friend. She shook herself to wake her from her daydream. When she saw the sky again, the clouds that appeared to have come out of nowhere blocked out the sunlight that she’d been enjoying so much out on the school playground, earlier on in the day. “That one looks like a pizza.”
“No. Jamie, you idiot, it looks like a pizza that someone has taken a great big bite from, right up there from the top hand corner.” She was right, of course. (She usually was) The top part of the ‘pizza’ wasn’t there. “That reminds me. Did you know that my mum and your dad are going to Chester’s Pizzeria? I’m so jealous! I’ve never been. Dad never liked the place, well he never really liked any Italian food at all. Mum said we should avoid going there as a respect to dad. I don’t  see her keeping her respect for dad! The cheek! I’m trying to persuade her to let me have my thirteenth birthday party there. Mum says it’s really expensive but it looks absolutely amazing and....”
“It’s not,”

“What do you mean it’s not?”
“Be patient, let me explain.”
“Okay. Sorry, Jamie”
“So, where was I? Oh yes... I went there once, about a year ago. The night of the fatal accident. So, we sat down and ordered. Everything was fine. Absolutely normal. Until we were ordering pudding. Before the blonde waitress who was serving us was called Charlotte, or at least that’s what it said on the name tag. She was very polite and she always asked me what I wanted to eat, not like some of those waitresses that think they’re too good for you and only asks your mum or dad what you want as if you aren’t even there. So, she was all perfect, then it was time to order pudding and she walked past me without taking the slightest acknowledgment to my existence. ‘And what does your son want, then? Mum ordered for me, and as she was walking away, she misplaced her footing and the tray she was carrying fell out of her hands. I leant over to try and catch it and caught it just in time. She reached the tray a second after me. If it weren’t for my fast thinking she’d have probably lost a week’s worth of wages to replace all the broken cutlery and plates. She gave mum a quick, nervous smile and all she said was that was lucky! That could’ve been disastrous! Good that I used to play Baseball with my brothers, bake in the States! I mean, how could she? She didn’t even thank me!”
“That’s strange”
“I know, right”
“No, that’s not what I mean. Jamie, you know you said this blonde haired-waitress was called Charlotte,”
“Yeah,”
“Well, what else did she look like? I mean, apart from the hair?”
“Hmm.... Let me see, well she had: a few freckles running across her nose; very red lips, I think she was wearing far too much lipstick, they were that red looking and she had bright,”
“Green eyes.” Eilean finished off. Jamie and Eilean looked deep into each other’s eyes and they knew that something was up. “Eilean, how do you know all this?”
“Well,” she started shakingly, “I was walking past the window on my way to the supermarket to run an errand for mum, and I was looking into the pizza shop window. There was a lady washing the windows from the inside. I saw her name tag said Charlotte on it and when I looked up at her face, I heard he say My God, the freak is looking at me.
“Well that was mean. But how is that stra...” He didn’t get to finish what he was saying before Eilean butted in. He was left hanging.
“I haven’t finished yet. The strange thing was,I could hear her talking, but her lips weren’t moving.”

Chapter Two

Chapter Two

“I’ve found them.” Mrs. McCall’s evil grin was visible throughout the whole room. It was a closed off building, away from the hustle and bustle of the working londoners heading home after a long, grueling, tiresome day at work. Twelve of them occupied the room. McCall sat at the head of the long, rectangular table that took up most of the area in the office. All eyes were on her. If anyone so much put a foot into the room before them, they would surely have tasted the tension that all the members of the meeting were radiating. She was their leader.

“How many are there? As many as we expected?”
“No, Shirley. There are three. They’ve been very careful. They know what they’re dealing with.”
“Of course they do, you idiot. They’ve stinking been through it themselves! Why wouldn’t they know what they were doing? What with Lucy and all.....” She shut herself up before she could give anymore away. She didn’t trust them enough to tell them about Lucy and she’d just given them a reason to interrogate her for further information. “Who’s Lucy?” asked a man in a white shirt and tie sitting towards the other end of the room, “You’ve never mentioned any Lucy before...” Her reply was on instinct and as soon as she’d uttered the last word she knew she’d been too harsh. “I don’t think that’s any of your business, excuse me, Mr. Watson.”

There was an awkward silence for a few seconds, then Shirley McCall carried on briefing her colleagues on the mission in progress. About five minutes later, a conversation of some interest was opened by a young american man called Jerry Michaels. “But, sorry McCall,” He said with a very strong american accent, “Shouldn’t we just go to the ‘big guys’ as you call them here and let them deal with the whole situation? I mean, that’s what we would do back in the states,”
“And that’s why you americans are so rubbish at everything?”
“You know what I mean.”  There was a short silence as they took in what was happening. “Look, I’m gonna put it simply. Are we telling Rogers?” A serious expression covered McCall’s face and nobody knew how she was going to take this suggestion.
“Yes, Jerry, we can go up to the top and tell them exactly what’s been happening. No-one will suspect a thing! Especially with me coming. No, we’ll just hope they side with us. After I killed one of their senior members they’ll be jumping out of their seats, they’ll be so happy to help us!” The sarcastic smile she was wearing along with the voice to match, disappeared in half a second. “Are you bloody insane? They were the ones that started the whole thing, you stupid american.” She then turned to the rest of the company, “Rogers. Knows. Nothing. Am I clear?” Everybody nodded, “Good. If he somehow finds out I will personally execute the mole by having whoever it may hung, drawn and quartered, just like so many other idiots that have decided to double-cross me. Be warned.”

The bullet entered his temple before he had time to register what was happening. The S.O.N.D organisation, run by Shirley McCain, was now silent. They were too disturbed by the slumped body of Jeremy Michaels, only a few inches away from them. A corpse ready for burning.

Hope you enjoy!!!

Chapter One

Eilean looked at herself in the mirror and sighed. This was about as good as it was going to get. Jeans and T-shirt. Nothing special... She walked out of her room and downstairs to where her mum was setting the breakfast table. She looked up as she entered the room. “Hey Sweetie! How did you sleep?”
“Fine, thanks mum... Just the usual.”
“Nightmares again?” Her mother inquired, “Honey, I thought you said they’d stopped!”
“Hey, mum, I don’t think they’ll ever stop.”

It was true. Ever since her father’s death, scenes from the night he died haunted her in slumber. Police sirens; flashing lights; a young police officer declaring the unimaginable, her father’s lifeless body lying on the floor and Toby. Toby, most of all. Her seven-year-old brother whom to most would seem very strange. Very strange indeed... The very strange thing was, that past week he seemed unnaturally concerned about dad’s health and well-being. Was it coincidence that he died that week or was it meant to happen? Once he prised the truth out of us, he ran around the house screaming his head off. His only friend, his best friend. No. More than that, his dad. Gone. She shivered at the very memory of that horrific night. The night she was yet to find out would change her life forever.

On her way to school, Eilean (with her brother picked up Jamie from the house next-door. He was her best and closest friend. He was the only one outside her family who knew about her nightmares. This was for two plain, simple reasons.Firstly, she was too nervous to tell anyone else (she didn’t really interact with the other kids in the class apart from Jamie) and furthermore, Jamie had had the same sort of thing that happen to him. However, it was his mum that died. She died at the same time as her dad, on the 12th of June. She’d skipped the last two weeks of school because of that. So had Jamie. They were at the funeral together, that’s were they really got to know each other.

As they walked down the steep hill leading to Edge Gate Glory Secondary they talked about school; Jamie’s Pet dog, Buster; which upgrades they would get on their skateboards.... What you would expect any pair of twelve year old kids to talk about, basically.

After two excruciatingly boring lessons, Jamie and Eilean met up in the corner of the playground for a chat. Or in their way of saying it, good old chin wag. “Do you ever wonder if we were told the whole truth about how our parents died? I mean, isn’t it a bit coincidental that they died on the same day, both supposedly car crashes, at supposedly the same junction, at the same time with the same cops telling us the news?” Jamie looked at Eilean in a quizzical expression, wondering what to reply, “Well, sort of...”
“I know, Jamie, but then, what have they got to hide from us? We are their kids, aren’t we?”
“Maybe we aren’t.”
“Jamie! How could you say such a thing?” Eilean was horrified, “Of course they’re our parents! How many times have you heard people compare you to your mother? They say you look like a male version of her! Really, Jamie, you should know better.”
“Okay, okay, no need to bite my ear off for it! I was just saying....” She gave him ‘the look’, “Okay, maybe you’re right, I was being a bit stupid.”
“A bit?”
“Okay, very stupid”
She grunted and replied, “Yeah you were...”
“Hey, look. Forget it! This is a useless conversation, anyway. What difference will it make?”
Jamie saw a twinkle in Eileen's eye.

Hi There!

Hi There!

I'm starting a blog because I'm writing a book and I want to be ably to share it with the world.

I will be posting it, at least s chapter a month.

I would really like some feedback on it as it is my first piece of 'serious' writing that I would eventually like to get published.

The name of the book is Counting Clouds (it's still possible for a change) and I think (for now) it's for ages 10+. It might get a little higher further on because of darker themes, but that's later..

Thank you, and I hope you enjoy Counting Clouds!
